Mentorship Meeting and Goals Template
Prepare an agenda, record goals and next steps, and capture what you agreed in each mentoring meeting.

Who it helps
Students and early-career researchers who meet regularly with a mentor and want each meeting to have a clear purpose, with goals and next steps they can come back to.
How to use it
- Before the meeting, write a short update and two or three points you want to cover. Name one specific question or piece of feedback to ask for.
- Set or review goals. Keep to two to four, each with a next step and a review date.
- After the meeting, note the advice you received and what you’ll do before next time.
- Download a copy after each meeting if you want a running record, then update the template for the next one.
For guidance on making goals specific, see setting mentorship goals. For the wider relationship, read our pillar on mentoring and mentorship and the reflection framework in hands-on learning and mentorship.
Your entries stay on this device. They're saved only in this browser, so nothing you type is sent to Next Step Forward or anyone else. Using a private window, clearing your browser data or switching devices removes them, so download a copy if you want to keep it.

Before the meeting
Goals
Keep to two to four goals. Make each one specific enough that you will know when it is done.
You've reached the limit of 4. Download a copy to start another set.
After the meeting
Prefer paper or a spreadsheet?
Download a blank copy. No sign-up or email needed.
Limitations
- The template supports your own preparation; it isn't a formal agreement. Agree expectations with your mentor directly.
- Keep sensitive details out of anything you share, and remember that a printed or downloaded copy is only as private as where you keep it.
- Entries are saved only in this browser on this device. Use the download for a record of each meeting.
